At The Way She

by Jeffrey Parren

I always remarked
at the way my mother
could fold an undersheet.

At the way she could
cook anything for dessert,
stove-top or oven-baked.

At the way she spoke.
Honesty and compassion,
of paramount concern.

At the way she eased
a troubled mind such as mine
to knowing it would be ok.

And now I remark daily
hoping I can be the way she was -
to my children, someday.

Author's Note: Transition from her loss to an eagerness for my own family.
