futures memories

by Peter Humphreys

from here
you can see
many places
where people
killed
and died
along
the shores
of Melvin
through
Fermanagh
to south
Tyrone
Catholic
Protestant
Dissenter
tillers of
the soil
soilers of
the till
grave stones
stone graves
and as
the sun
beats down
and
crickets call
a gentle breeze
can do no harm
as they make
their wayword
homes in
futures
memories

I love the contrast here of the "gentle breeze" with the severity of the actions within the frame of long history in these place... it's fragile cooleness hesitant amidst the "grave stones" and into the heavy perspective of the past--and into the "future memories" (a beautiful construction).
