A Belated Birthday Package

by Jim Moore

First, I chose a box,
Something small,
One that long ago
Was passed down from
A lineage of previous senders--—
Grandfathers to fathers,
Mothers to sons,
Selected from its sun-streaked perch,
Where, each previous time,
Weathered through the decades of calamities,
Held back the heartbreak of floods--—
The tale of each hand-written heirloom a prelude,
Read with anticipation to the treasure inside.

So glad you finally boarded the pathetic ship, Jim! Welcome aboard. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I love the generational feel to this piece--almost passing it down to the reader. You make me care about this item, and the memories it echoes. I think some of the commas distract me a bit, but other than that-- great read. :)
