Snapshots: Smoky Mountains 2007

by Tracy Ellen

Sssshhhhh,
I’m there again
Hips sore on the hard ground
Head on the stuff sack
Smelly clothes, 2-man tent
Weary shoulders, aching back
And I love it.

I’m listening to my mind
I’m back trekking along
The creek carries my troubles away
The bugs singing their work-day songs
No one, no where, no cares,
Just trying to get there.

I am the god of fire
I can bring it forth at will
Watching it, captivated
Holds my heart still
And I realize I am small
It’s those flames that hold divine power.
I stare too long, stay up too late
Hour after hour after hour

Morning dew on Mountain wildflowers
Muddy boots and frizzy hair
No pretense, dirt and leaves
Trees and cool breeze
Footsteps paced and timed
A reprieve in the gap
Ascending, descending
The pride of a mountain climbed.

I struggle everyday to go home again.
