seaward summer

by Peter Humphreys

down by
the bonny banks
of Boyne
where cultures
clashed
and pipe
and drum
may ne'er
be played again
I watch as
swirling in
the even air
rooks twist
and turn
as if
unknowing
homing
coming
going
turning
leading
leaving
empty trees for
mouldering
churches of
past faiths past
and
as I watch
you pair
and part
I wonder
if the
shard within thy
heart
will melt
or fragile
splinter
t'is passing quick
this angelus trick
upon the swelling
swollen tide as
gulls
and galls
and buoys
and bells
ring home
the seaward
summer
