My North Carolina Home

by James Zealy

North Carolinian born and bred, raised in a gentler slower time
As time passes by thinking of my birthplace
I understand that no other place can be like here
The richness of its climate fall, winter, spring and summer
Gives a complete flavor of the seasons

In Fall the burnt orange and browns, and Yellows on the hardwoods
Evident everywhere we go
The colors blaze abundant on the crisp autumn days
Driving through the Carolina foot hills that is my home

During winters, crisp cold winds, occasional snows
Bring brisk exhilarating days, just cold enough
Mountain snows, abundant skiing, the colors of the evergreens
Coastal breezes temperate weather, Empty beaches
No better time to enjoy the oceans beauty

Spring brings a cascade of colors and odors
The sweet smell of blooming dogwoods, yellow and white
Brilliant flowers of the Azaleas, crimson, pink white and red
Gentle fragrant blooms of the magnolia
Nothing is like North Carolina in spring

Summer slowly eases the flowers away
The warmth of the sun, the call of the beaches
Hiking in the mountains, clear cold streams rushing by
Feeling the cold chill of the clear mountain water
Boating fishing, swimming, relaxing on the gentle lakes
A vacationer’s delight

A place of new things colored by its historical past
New Bern's colonial capital
The opulent beauty of Biltmore House
Old Salem and its period dress and delicacies
A mixture blended as a part of our legacy

Grace charm and the slow southern drawl
Still defines the way we live
Seemingly an island amidst arrogance and impatience
I love my North Carolina Home.

Author's Note: My first attempt at poetry. It is what it is. It's based on returning to NC after living in DC for 4 years from 1989 to 1993. I swore when I came back I would never make a career change that invlolved relocation from NC again.

This is an awesome first poem!!! The descriptions are so vibrant and vivid, I can feel what you are seeing as you return from your journey away, and also your appreciation for what you may have taken a bit for granted?? Lovely, James, just lovely. Not at all the words I would imagine coming from a high tech guru such as yourself. Hehe.

I've got to agree with Alison, it's an awesome start. I envy you the more defined seasons in NC. We don't get occasional snow, lol, we get seldom snow. But, when it does, it shuts down the works down here. Everybody goes nuts and nobody knows how to drive in it. I'm too cold natured though to live further north. I freeze to death under most people's air conditioners in mid summer, lol. Really enjoyed this.

Wonderful description of NC. My oldest daughter went to college in NC. Her husband grew up in Fayetteville. They lived for a year or so in the Lumberton area. Beautiful state. You can be proud. (I wanted it a little warmer so spend winters in SC near the coast.)
