Goodbye Spice

by Tony Whitaker

We laid a friend to rest today
for twelve years by our side
so many times she gave us smiles
my wife talking and walking the miles
all the times those eyes so wise
begging a stroke to show we care

It was Maggie who felt the closest
fulfilling all the needs
and when the light
went out of Spice
her own dimmed for awhile

Forever haunted
by those waning moments
holding her head in hand
tears stained my cheek then chin
as the doctor freed her pain

No more denial
we know she's gone
and our emotions continue
their relentless reign
Now, dear Lord,
we wish to hold
and feel her fur again

Author's Note: We will miss this grand white German Shephard and the joy she had in life. Now she joins her sister, Sugar, who left us two years ago. I can see their mouths opened wide using them trying to pull one over to be king!

This one is especially poignant for me and reminds me of when my favorite cat, Ashley was killed... thanks for sharing..
