Reflective Surfaces + No Self-Esteem =

by Aaron Blair

The mirror is judge, jury, executioner.
It's god and daddy, too.
It will let you know
if you've ever truly been
alone with your own face.
It will turn your chin
with a practiced hand,
force the otherwise
darting line of your eye.
It'll be mother and midwife,
there to hold your legs open
when you give birth to yourself.
The mirror will bite your tongue
every time you open your mouth.

When I first read this, I really identified with the last line. I still feel that way.
