Times Like These

by Jeffrey Parren

It's at times like these
when I really wonder
what it is all about.

The harder you play
the bigger the crash.

I once thought life was real,
but it is just a game,
designed to screw with our head,
and just when things
get better and maybe best,
life crashes down yet another
tough smack of misfortune.

Money, sure, is a factor.
As time goes by though,
for me the simplest happiness
is my lady friend and a couch,
and these days even that
gets marred by me?  Her?

The past carries its weight, sure,
but luggage is only good
if you plan on going somewhere.

I guess it is just time again,
to roll up my sleeves and work,
work 70 hours a week again,
so life passes me by,
and I can do no more
to ruin my progress.

I've made many efforts to discern
what life really is about,
yet it never rings so true,
when things start to go your way,
and it all comes crashes on you,
only ten times harder than the last
until you can't hold your head up,
not anymore.
