I Can't Watch Television Any More

by Dan Kasten

I watch the television blankly
repeatedly thinking the line from Pink Floyd
"did you trade your heroes for ghosts?"

I take another bite of carrot washed with a mouthful of gin
and toast an elderly couple walking on the beach
a family happily walking in the woods

if I were a Catholic I would pray to St. Anthony
to recover the love I thought we had
but God doesn't work that way, does he, I think

another channel, another theme song with lyrics
I've never paid attention to before pierces my conscience
it's only then I realize that every breath I took for you was lost.

Author's Note: For songwriter Jenny Morgan in Houston and Chris Heckman of Epliogues in Denver. I promise, my time of self pity has come to an end.
