The Blues Are Born by Tony Whitaker
Born on the backs
of the black mans burden
Southern share cropper
chopping cotton
Summers swelter
filled with song
Taking advances
all along
When the crop comes in
there is nothing left
The landowner takes it all
the white mans theft?
The boll weevil steals,
piles on this poor mans plight
Like the banker charging
interest out of sight
This is the stuff that makes them sing
to ease the bite of the white man's sting
