The Blues Are Born

by Tony Whitaker

Born on the backs
of the black man’s burden

Southern share cropper
chopping cotton

Summer’s swelter
filled with song

Taking advances
all along

When the crop comes in
there is nothing left

The landowner takes it all
the white man’s theft?

The boll weevil steals,
piles on this poor man’s plight

Like the banker charging
interest out of sight

This is the stuff that makes them sing
to ease the bite of the white man's sting
