College Love Song (sonnet)

by Ashley Lane

Liquor before beer, you are in the clear;
beer before liquor, I could not fall quicker
for you. You said sweet nothings in my ear
and I believed that I could be her,
the girl you wished would make the sex worthwhile
and the morning after a time for open eyes.
I laughed at your jokes. I could always smile
when you were happy and I do realize
you have not been tamed. I don’t want to hold
your free spirit. I just want to be the one
whose love would be so beautiful and bold
that you won’t want to seek temptation.
Another love confession, another promise betrayed.
No time for moping; I have a game to play.
