Lucy Steele at the Kit Kat Club

by Ashley Lane

Don’t you dare tell Mama about this
dearest sister, most beloved friend.
Don’t you know that I can’t help smiling
like this. Thinking like this. Tell them
fickle boys I like the way their eyes look
when they stare at those mountains.

I prefer mine in black kohl, drawn out
like Cleopatra’s before that horrid asp.
Dear sweet friend, I must say that
I would much prefer looking at those
nice boys, looking at me, thinking about
what it would take to get backstage.

I never had a taste for locks or small
dollars, don’t you know. I much prefer
an enraptured man, willing to risk
poverty for me. (Of course I know,
dear creature, that fortune favors the
brave. It cannot be any other way).

Author's Note: Lucy Steele is the main villainess in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. The Kit Kat Club is where Sally Bowles performs in Cabaret.
