Imagine

by Ashley Lane

A long stemmed rose
on a mosaic.

The rose was promised to Mother
as a token of faith
in the city.

We’re not going to drown tonight.

Let’s just stand silent for ten minutes
and pretend the apple was not sin.
Let’s believe the fruits of our labor
are not forbidden.

There is an apple blossom on the stone;
a promise of home.

I lay my rose in the orchard of steel
and promise that I will swim.
