seeing red

by Cassandra Leigh

i see it in your eyes, the way
the world disappears to you too
as we find the
promised land
in the space between us
skin on skin and
synchronized heartbeats
broad shoulders and a narrow waist and
in the morning a voice like
red carpet on gravel
in the middle of a beautiful somewhere and
all i can think is how you're
radiant
and how i was your most perfect coup
and how you took this little girl
so afraid of striking matches
and taught her to breathe faster at the thought of
fire on bare skin
you've changed the world for me
now the gathering dark is
a kiss and a pounding heartbeat
and a devouring hunger
now the woods are
pulsing with the same life
that runs in your veins
now my white bed is
red on the insides of
my eyelids
the place where
i can never tell where i end
and you begin

congrats on POTD and sorry that ex-boyfriends have the power to ruin such sensitive material.

This is beautiful. I especially liked the line: "and how I was your most perfect coup" That line is both violent, because of what a coup is, and gentle, for the sound of the world "coup", which is exactly what love is. Thank you.
