I woke up this morning
with the oddest compulsion
to paint my bedroom wall

so I did
dove gray
with a huge yellow splatter
in the middle

no real design,
just yellow on gray

like laughter in fog
like sun in an overcast sky
like you in my life

and now that it's done
I'm sitting here
grinning like a fool
staring at a wall

that my landlord
will never understand.
