Oregon Trail

by Leonard M Hawkes

You would not have been here now,
Not in this season,
The road from the East was far--

But the bleakness,
The silent settling of the March mist,
The desolate spread of cedar and scrub,
This rich, plain Western beauty
All still sing of you--

Enticing, I would say--
Here on this summit,
Where no one yet has come to claim
Or stay; today, you
Might have had the inclination.

I can almost see it in my mind's eye as I have been along part of the Oregon Trail. The wild beauty is breath taking. Briefly you have described it well.
