Coffee With My Shadow

by Dan Kasten

I had coffee with my shadow today
it was nice to sit in the new Spring sun and
discuss life below depths

I see my shadow so rarely these days
his preference, not mine, so we talked about
that and he confessed that he had started to

mingle with a different crowd, a night time crowd,
a gathering point for men whose souls have been
removed for cleaning or carving, he couldn’t decide which

and with that he covered his head and disappeared
leaving me the check but that’s OK with me
since he looked like he could use a break anyway.

I'm off to find my shadow now. This is intriguing!

If we are willing to confront our own shadow, are we not really seeking our own light?

Mmmm reminds me of a long favorite quote from Shakespeare's Tempest "This thing of darkness, I aknowledge mine." (Prospero) I love the intimacy here, and the pace and pungency of your little story.

very creative approach, Dan, and well written. I like that your shadow has been mingling with the night time crowd and avoiding the light of day. It makes me wonder if this arose from an actual situation - your shadow being a friend - or if its just a bit of fanciful writing? Either way, good poem.

I like the relaxed and familiar feel you give the reader. Knowing yourself comes in increments and takes a lifetime...and then some still don't get it. You seem at ease with the differences in yourself, the subtlties, it makes me feel at ease as well. - I dig the vibe - RCat

Wonderfully whimsical!

...the two of you make a very impressive duet, this is deeper than deep and existentialer than existential...like the line breakage and the walk of each stanza...bow, to the spotlighted one...charlie
