Alchemy

by Richard Vince

Old gold for wisdom,
New gold for the dreams
That will get you there,
To that sunlit plateau
From where you can
Finally see it all.

Voices old and new will
Give you words to savour
And words to spit back out,
But the taste is something
You can only acquire.

Only when you learn caution
Will you learn when
It is not needed. Only when
You know you can live
Without it will you
Get what you want.

Only as the gold of my
Dreams has tarnished into
Wisdom have I come to know
These things. My futile wish
To have known sooner gives
Birth to another: to share
My wisdom with you.

But to do so would rob you
Of the most important
Lesson of all.

So as I watch you make
All those mistakes that
I made so long ago,
The pain I feel for you
Is tempered with the
Memory that the shiny surface
Needs to be dulled.

One day, I hope, you will
Look back as I do now
And see the transformation
As it happened, and know
That it was all worthwhile.
