communal (breakdown) by Jared Fladelandwe wait
across a table like children
awaiting punishment from our parents
occasionally staring into each other's eyes.
our food arrives
and the silence does the talking for us
as we cut our food into tiny bits
and chew only for a few seconds.
by the time we leave,
it's only customary for us to say
"I had a wonderful evening,
let's do this again sometime". 06/06/2007 Posted on 06/06/2007 Copyright © 2025 Jared Fladeland
