Anywhere But Her

by Richard Vince

Nod, nod...acknowledge without listening
As she tells you everything that
Brings her joy.

Her face was designed to smile,
But yours was made for frowning;
For that disdainful look as
You look anywhere but at her.

Glazed eyes reflect the beauty that
Shines from her rather than
Letting it into your mind, your heart,
Your soul that she longs to touch.

She sits down, and the lights dim.
The all pervasive radiance fades
To a seedy half light, the smile
Gives way to a tired melancholia as
You change from mirror to black body
And her star dies.

As she walks away, she reignites,
But you ignore the light and
Focus on the shadows she casts.

No smiles; merely ignorance of
All that she is and
Destruction of all that she gives.

Wow. This is awesome. You really captured the pessimist always seeing half-empty instead of half-full.

Now this is what I would call character assassination...but why would she long to touch the soul that snuffs out her flame? Perhaps there are parallels with the Stockholm Syndrome? Or is this purely from the perspective of 'Frowning Man'? Whatever the mechanics, this is a moody piece redolent with eau de film noire - it has class :)

this speaks to me of the bordom in repitition, i would not admire the same piece of art every day without distraction, as also the frowning man would not-pt
