Fortune Cookies

by Maria Terezia Ferencz

"The situation is changeable, yet you cannot push the river."
encrypted on a virgin slip of white sullied
by fingers grasping greedily for a sign
begging the universe for a hint of things to come

hunger not diminished by the feast
or the knowledge gained
they move on to another
touching, prying pulling open
to see what is inside
"You are what you think about all day long"
is what the slip says this time
BUT I ALREADY KNEW THAT

UUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHH sigh
one more time pushing poking
reaching around I pry
hoping I find the answer why
one more time I try
"Miss You"
is what was tucked inside
Of course.....
now I understand

Author's Note: true story....how strange is Miss You on a slip from a fortune cookie??? "Struggle as hard as you can for whatever you believe in"

i once got one that contained a blank slip. That was scarey. In this poem, you've described the weird little anxious sense I get everytime I sweat over choosing, and then opening, one of these things.
