A 'Sabino' Girl

by Trisha De Gracia

My frog's-eyes are wide
wet and amphibian
dry, gushing, vast, vapid

searching your body, the tilt of your head
downcast eyes that used to be...
I mean, they used to be...

Jesus, Screw it.
What on earth am I doing here?
Staring at your face like a map of the stars
all the while still tiptoing down on earth
as one by one they crash down
(such little embers!)
charring my naked, kissless feet.

I sat back and thought
I really did
"Oh Christ I've become a 'Sabino' girl..."

Author's Note: I actually did. I was like my god, I feel like I look like the way Mike paints some of the pathetic women he encounters in real life or in his mind or whereever he comes up with the awesome, painfully true depictions or the dark side of womanly, humanly ways. I was like god damn, I'm looking at MYSELF with disdain from the rafters.

My heartfelt condolences! There's some monstrous pictures hanging in his gallery.

Somehow no matter how many of Mike's poems I've read - oh, scratch that - I did write one poem in his style. Yes, maybe we, at one time or another, have become "Sabino" girls. (UH, we love you Mike)
