Rubble Town Dues

by Alisa Js

there was a time beyond time when I would have done anything
jumped off tall buildings
and if that wasn't enough, sail over shark infested waters
all for a kiss
a chance at what I was certain was ever after happiness and a blissful existence ...

those were the days when the sun stood tall
regal even among the others,
in orbit around the nebulous factor
of maybe...

when did it digress to this?
a sniveling snort of some back alley talk
I stand on the side lines and listen
tears streaming down from what used to be eyes full of love and adoration,
your words, they flatter and entrance
caressing the essence of smiles in a vice, squeezed tight
promising the moon if you could and they bite
all of them, I see that
and why?

yet, with me, you're so harsh
cruel, some might agree
no tender romantic notions my way
no promises of something tangy out back next to the mulberry bush
or rivers of sweet
hints of, well you know

how did it come to this
now?
I wonder as I turn towards the heap
once standing as some kind of raw sentiment
of love ever after
joy beyond words
nothing but rubble town dues ...
