Our Melody: A Villanelle

by Jeffrey Parren

The music set in before the beat
What began a dance of intensity
Our hearts' melody became one

Finding mind and spirit first
We found how much we did agree
The music set in before the beat

Seconds to find out pasts cursed
Differing paths leading to we
Our hearts' melody became one

A future together soon immersed
A family to follow so happily
The music set in before the beat

Lessons of a life not rehearsed
Situation so unable to forsee
Our hearts' melody became one

Such winding roads ours did vary
Such intimacy and passion deeply
The music set in before the beat
Our hearts' melody became one

Wonderful the way it should be let go of the past and look ahead............

Yeah, the poem itself is quite good (kind of reminds me of the epilogue from Raising Arizona -- I can't help being weird); it has this effective feeling of a happy actualization... Which I usually run from, but I am staying put this time. I like the Villanelle form, I use it often in fact, but it is tricky. The first line of each stanza is "suppose" to rhyme with third line of each one as well. That's the rule, but hey, were rules not made to be broken? Nevertheless, Dylan Thomas has an excellent Villanelle called "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night", which is definitely worth checking out sometime... Anyway, yes, good poem - very nicely done indeed!
