Under A Far Away Sky

by Charles M Harrison

Under a far away sky
laden with clouds of grey
Beneath limbs covered in white
that bring dark to the light of day.

Nightmares and dreams meet
in mist and battlefield haze.
Men who scurry like rats
caught in an endless maze.

Futures end so others go on
and all a price will pay.
Some itÂ’s a life, some itÂ’s a limb
some a piece of their soul each day.

Under a far away sky
in the steam and heat of the sun.
Beneath the green of great leaves
from which rivers of water run.

Fear of unseen, fear of unknown
death may be inches away.
In dark shadows even atheists
bow heads for a moment to pray.

Futures end so others go on
and all a price will pay.
Some itÂ’s a life, some itÂ’s a limb
some loose more sanity each day.

Under a far away sky
with not a cloud in sight.
Tan colored sand, scorching heat,
endless stars in the cool of night.

One moment friends, enemies the next,
not knowing which local to trust.
One second laughing with a good buddy,
next youÂ’re face down in the dust.

Futures end so other go on
and all a price will pay.
Some itÂ’s a life, some itÂ’s a limb
some blame themselves each day.

Under a far away sky
white clouds in the clear blue.
Endless fields of gold and green
covered with the morning dew.

Monuments in ordered rows
reaching backwards into the past.
Soldiers who went into the breach
and Sailors steadfast at the mast.

Futures ended so others go on
and all here a price did pay.
All gave a life to save a friend
who remember them each day.

Celtic connections on NPR was playing some wonderfully haunting music as I was reading this, a most awesome setting to read this piece. The combination gave me chills.

Thank you for remembering in such a poignant way the sacrifices freely given for us. It's beautiful.

This is just beautiful, Charles. Great use of a well-written repeat stanza. I like how you've encompassed all of the wars just by describing the differences in environment for each. Nicely done.
