On Marriage by Tony Whitakersmiling and chatting
planning a day
life fulfilling
her mysterious mind
at work or play
we laugh across the den
the TV lying dormant
silence fills the room
she lies across the sofa
i command the recliner
of course
chuckling as we speak
about dumb things done
in a long life
as man and wife
there were times
i asked why
she must have too
wanting to walk away
start over
maybe with someone new
but we stay
and find delights
adding spice
to a plastic
middle-class life
i remember a time
many years ago
opening tired eyes
in the dark of night
her staring back
with a smile of delight
in a fog so far away
her lips move as I read
I love you
eyelids laden close
feeling warmer
that blush of trust
in the knowing
this is the stuff
that fuels the pyre
of our...true love

Posted by Joan Serratelli on 05/27/07 at 12:44 PM This is a wonderful description of a progression of a marriage; apparently a good one. I am pleaseed that "true love" still exists for some of us.

Posted by Alisa Js on 05/28/07 at 08:11 AM Yes indeed, you are so correct here. True love is so much more than the flash and fireworks most associate with the term. Commitment and loyalty are two must haves for a long term relationship. Its the seemingly small things that really matter over the long run. Trust, mutual respect, honor, etc. etc.... aloha
Posted by Alison McKenzie on 05/31/07 at 02:03 PM It is the kind of intimacy that only time and committment (through the "for better or worse" times) can produce, a rare and precious gift in this world of getting the biggest bang for our buck. I like what Jeff said - it's all about that. I like the way you wrote it down in your sharing it with us. Thank you, Tony!
