My Victory

by Alisa Js

the words spilled out
we all heard them clear
as they managed to make their way around the room's air
I listened and watched,
as some never looked back
others hung on tightly, slightly chagrined
embarassed even
by the meaning so vacant
empty sounds without substance or reason,
trying desperately to hide behind
some plastered on smile ...

attorneys, what a life some must lead
how do they live with the lies they repeat?
on behalf of their client
hot-shot lawyering
with their self-righteous stance
unblinking, to the bitter end ...

the truth prevailed that day
we knocked them down, flat
and walked over, politely
and left,
victorious
as it should be ...
