Dreams Past Due

by Alisa Js

I wanted it to be everything I'd always imagined
and maybe if it were twenty years ago, it could have
but now is today and we're way past dreams and wishes
laying there in piles of ethereal compost
blown out candles
mashed potatoes,
fragments of once treasured lines ...

I listen as you speak with the others
and feel the closeness of your heartbeats and love,
a longing rises that never left
from deep within this lonely soul
we can't pull back the band-aids of yesterday's choices
I should be grateful, we have what we've got
more than some families
to be certain,
less than others, a given ...

balance is crucial
objectivity is vital
for too long I have trudged in those shoes of a martyr
for what, exactly?
for at the end of the day all we have is ourselves
no one to blame
nothing to point with,
and I am responsible for me and no other ...

I wanted it to be everything I'd always dreamt of
for as long as I can remember,
loving this mother
I never knew ...

Another great write about feeling. You capture them so well.
