Darwin Appeared To Me

by Jeffrey Parren

I crouched down by the river's bed,
minding the whimsical aim
the water, the animals, the fish
all took towards the one goal.

Closed my eyes. Darwin appeared.
Survival. It drives us all.
Either for or against,
that remains the question.

Boundary-pushers and self-loathers alike,
find the threshold too limiting,
and thus nearly breaking it,
find themselves more alive,
being closer to death itself.

For those "lifers" who toil,
the day to day becomes enraging,
not risking anything,
the spectrum needs widening,
the red or the blue pill?
