twilight

by William P Strucke

are you sleeping or are you awake?
i wait nearby
stretching the minutes
hoping for an answer
an alarm in the distance
a car passing in the twilight
you stir in your sleep
urgently i wander off
praying you will hear and enquire
why do you not speak?
why can you not see?
you and I are alike
lonely as i am you are
and yet you push me away
i won't poke or prod
i won't call your phone
i won't say hello
but i will wait
hoping with the slightest hope
that you might one day awake
and answer my questions
and talk through the night

until morning, my dear
sleep, dream, hope
good bye
