Uncomfortably Numb: A Boomer's Lament by Tony WhitakerI have become comfortably numb
- Pink Floyds Comfortably Numb" from The Wall
Once upon a time our magical generation
had at once become so incrediblyComfortably Numb
as we caught a fleeting glimpse
out of the corner of our eyes
induced by flower power and idolized notions
a generation ad-mired and admonsihed
our hopes helped along by magical potions
regaled we swooned adrift
peaceful in plaintiff platitudes
We begged the "Man" to Give Peace a Chance
where everybody was talking about
regulation, integrations, meditations
United Nations, congratulations
we so appealed for that peaceful plane
We felt the Fab Fours' naïve notion
of All You Need Is Love
they were saying nothing we could do
that was not already done
but we thought it was easy
So we flew Over the Hills and Far Away
as mellow was the man
who knew what he was missing
many, many men, then
could not see that open road
if all men would just share the load
Now look at what now we have become
for what we once were beaten
as we fell into Wall Street's call
where families have lost the battle
since they no longer matter
a battle that can't be won
Our world is now a boomer's wasteland
which our generation has undone
so I waste away in these waning days
knowing now the only song
our generation knows will be sung:
Happiness...
Is a Warm...
Gun

Every history of every nation I've ever read their songs had variant stanzas from "happiness is a warm gun" to "happiness is a fair fletched arrow", or "happiness is a sharper sword" or stronger club... Looking at history's proven path, it's dreamers that say we can rise above it, truly, not realists. History shows us bloodthirsty and as instinctually motivated as the animal kingdoms. Great write. Very thought provoking. |
