Red Dawn

by Danny Washington

The silence,
No man breathes, no bird sings,

The anticipation,
Each man numb with a fear,
A fear that leaves you feeling empty,

An overwhelming sight,
The sun ascending over the mountains,
Fifty thousand men, lifeless,
Like the steel they carry,

A voice,
A man, come to terms with the knowledge of his death,
Fearing only for his place in heaven,
Issues his commands,
Condemning his men to the same fate,

The silence, broken,
The legs move, leaving the mind to dwell,
The sound of metal building to a crescendo,
As weapon and body meets,
Thought now obsolete,
The body commands itself,

The blood runs,
But no man feels pain,
The mind died with the silence,

The next hour is over,
In what feels like moments,
The silence returns,

As an ex-military man, the last two stanzas are the nails! Great piece my man. I need to read more of your poesie to see your style(s).

You catch the dread, the surreal feel, the dehumanizing nature of war, and the very personal element as well.
