split second by Jared FladelandDriving at 90 MPH
across the plains of North Dakota:
a duck flew in front of my car.
it seemed to stop time and space
as it floated for a moment in front of my car.
The sheer green of its head and neck
reflected the early morning light
and I could count every feather on its body.
The water in the ditches seemed to stop churning,
the cars I was passing stopped lagging,
and my own 1989 Pontiac Grand Am, gray,
halted in its own tracks.
And then the duck flew away,
time sped back up,
and off I went,
driving at 90 MPH
across the plains of North Dakota. 05/05/2007 Posted on 05/05/2007 Copyright © 2024 Jared Fladeland

Posted by Alison McKenzie on 05/29/07 at 03:47 PM I had a similar encounter once, with this HUGE bird that was headed straight for my car's windshield when I was driving on the freeway. Talk about a freaky experience!! I wrote a poem about it too, called "Some Kind of Bird." I'm afraid I didn't capture the experience as succinctly as you...wonderful! |
