i became nothing

by Emily Davidson

"you're gorgeous,"
he'd say
his eyes hypnotized
by the body
above him

it was
total
passion
addiction
obsession

the way we
held each other
in our hands;
the desperate searching
of our mouths

and i
could hear every
limb of mine
singing
screaming
in harmony with him,
the beautiful consonance
of our bodies

he was saying my name
as though it was a spell
that could cast away
his past

but when he realized
i could not fix him
suddenly,
i became nothing
