Geography & Turbulance

by Elizabeth Seago

Your heart is in my hands
But these feet are restless and this heart is never satiatied.
Your lovely little head dreams of peaceful nights in bed,
My face nuzzled into your chest.
All the while, my hair yearns for a few more years of the all too familiar feel of whipping wind, my face screams for taillight tans on the freway, & my ears plead for an obnoxiously loud soundtrack.

Geography was never my strong point
But I'm pretty sure that my mind and your heart haven't been on the same continent for quite some time.
And I want you to know that this wasn't a decision that either of us made.

Your eyes gaze into mine,
Searching for eternity and finding only cabin fever and uncertainty.
You begin to cry and I instinctively hold you in my arms,
Soothing your worried mind with the usual.
"Darling, I'm not going anywhere."

I wonder if you know that I'm not departing
Because I don't want to break you.
Because I can't bear to see you in shambles.
It's alright ; I'll be fine.
I lost my boarding pass when I first looked into your eyes.

Author's Note: "I'm almost drowning in her sea, she's nearly crawling on her knees, it's almost everything I need." -counting crows Why am I so restless? Why am I never satisfied?

There are several lines here that really struck me, but I especially like the last one!

after a relationship living on two different levels ends, we discover a new and unique balance within ourselves alone...something i think we all need to think about when times are tough. amazing the emotion captured here especially with the nuzzling image and the crying in the arms...these two set the entire stage for me as a reader. told me more than i needed to know about the situation present and it feels like distance. distance is one thing when it is actually present, but when both people are in one room and the distance is instead presented by their dissimilarities...then true sadness can set in, because the space created by two people close enough to touch is much more painful and real than anything miles and borderlines can create. i also love the line about the "obnoxiously loud soundtrack". never settle for almost when everything is out there. good poem es...a step up from your average in my opinion.

Your title really drew me in. It's interesting how you can be in the same room with someone, yet feel as if you're on two different continents. The last line of the first stanza seems a little jumbled for me though, I feel like there needs to be a break. My favorite line is, "Searching for eternity and finding only cabin fever and uncertainty." I like the image this line gives me, with such potency. A very insightful piece on relationships, and the ups and downs. Great read :)
