To Burn

by Alisa Js

Are we good for anything other than kindle wood?
We both know how to start these fires
But to keep the flame from turning blue
Now, that's another factor …

Surround me with live embers, red
Taking flight we'll rise
Toward the heavens while they watch us spin
For an indeterminate time we glide,
Convinced of ever after …

A hint of sudden, treacherous winds
Blew in from nowhere shores
Southern slip exposed and how,
Landing slow we slide straight past
This backwards notion we thought we knew
Where dreams lay dormant, pretending
Cut and wounded near that site
Those embers fell and burned,
On this smoky trail to hell and back …

I keep thinking with my mind, somehow
This pain is not that great,
Train wrecks, fog and certain toxins
I've suffered through and came out swinging
Undefeated even,
This too, will land on my mantle piece
And find its trophy's throne,
And walk around
No, strut its stuff
Just one more time
Before we're done …

Let us live again inside the fire of the flame that gives
Everything and anything
To incite that blue and red …
