haunting by Peter HumphreysI have
never known
a night like this
upon the mouldering mount
all day the fog just did not lift
and now as lights cast blankets on the gloom
and statues appear to disappear at will
there is a deep chill
a weep of night
a seep of light
upon this cursed spot
as down through railings
black and speared
the daffodils are white with fright
and in the many slips and lanes
and creaks and grains
there is a sense of night
a lingering
longing
saddening
loss of light
on this
sinister
sullen
sodden
haunting
spot

Author's Note: Edinburgh is dominated by its castle. For a whole day it never appeared from the sea fog.
