supine

by Peter Humphreys

pity
the pavement poor
scattered in ones and twos
beneath the tourists' feet
and staggering drunks
supine
servile
suppressed
some waiting
for charity's
cold hand to
touch them
others
beyond reclaim
inward spiralling
outward blank
it seems
as though
long time ago
the dreamers
on this mount
slow failed
their vision
of Zion

Author's Note: Edinburgh had a key role to play in Scotland's Protestant Reformation. It is interesting to reflect what these reformers would make of the modern city.
