It breaks

by Meagan Green

I want to feel angry at all of you
for taking advantage of the world,
but I can't because I appreciate
my compassion.

I want to blow up everyone
who takes this life for granted,
but I can't because I do sometimes.

I've been demanded
to care only about me,
say "screw you" to the trees
that stop me from building
the humanistic dream
of structure.

I'd puncture myself
if I weren't just like you.

Can't you see the structure in the trees
before you build them?
If you take their lives away
you can very well honor them.
But no, you piss on the walls
and chain dogs to logs
and you forget
because you're lonely

that you don't have to be.

It breaks because you break it.
