In Sickness and in Health

by Jane E Pearce

I guess you can say

the honeymoon is over-

no more coy modesty

to smile about.

no blushing cheeks.

.

Things are real now- you

can hardly walk, and choke

if you eat too fast. I wash

you when needed and put

on you an external catheter

so we can both sleep at night.

.

I often remember that beautiful

September afternoon, many years ago,

dressed in wedding clothes and the words.

"in sickness and in health."

These words ran through me from head to foot. Very poignant and direct. Thank you.
