a good Friday

by Peter Humphreys

there is
no
moon
tonight

but
in every way
it has been
a good Friday

at 9pm
Venus shone
solitary
radiant

at 3pm
as my mother taught me
the sun went dark
with cold and cloud

at 9am
the bells
did not
toll

someone
asked me
why is this
such a dull day

I said
have we
forgotten
our remembering

at 3am
I am reading
Pavic alone
by candle light

I fly as a bird
through old Belgrade
between
Sava and Danube

this was not
a dull day
it was a
Good Friday

"Good" in so many ways and like everyday, always made better with poetry. Thanks for this, Peter.

You fly as a bird through time, from river to river. And shine radiant with your candlelit poem. And I see I have a great adventure in my future... to read Pavic! I was moved by your poem to look into his work, which I have not read! One of our local poets in Pasadena is Serbian, she will know of him, I am sure, and I look forward to talking to her about him. I never know where my adventure will lead as I wade into the stream of your poem... I had a very good Friday, and now...even better!

Have you read "Dictionary of the Khazars"? I hear it is the most unusual read and have been meaning to read it. You poetry seems to pay homage to his style and well written!!
