These Lips by Joe CramerThese lips that I have kissed both here and there
While in your arms I have held you and lain
At your side, while morning light creeps in here.
Against the window, I can hear the rain,
I listen so closely, so carefully
To the sounds of your soft silent slumber.
I smile a quiet smile, so gleefully
While I gaze upon you with such wonder.
My heart holds you close, and yet there is pain
As you sleep so quietly next to me.
Outside winds beat on the window again.
I close heavy eyes, not able to see.
These sweet lips I have kissed, I have known why
At soft close of morning, I breathe a sigh. 04/01/2007 Posted on 04/03/2007 Copyright © 2025 Joe Cramer

| Posted by Kathleen Wilson on 04/03/07 at 03:40 PM Beautiful line flow. The rhyming is subtle and has the feeling of being natural, instead of forced, and the poem's focus on the musing, and atmosphere is enhanced rather than interrupted. It has at once a conversational quality and a very old feel, almost philosophical, like the metaphysical poets. |
