Bye Bye, Blue American Skies by Maria Francescaa long, long time ago
I can still remember
how my country used to make me proud
and I served just like my father had
off to save the world like Galahad
as I sang the hymns and anthems
right out loud
and although September came with sorrow
I still believed in bright tomorrows
we would be victorious
our veangeance would be glorious
well, there was no way I could foresee
that my government would mislead me
but the U.S.A.'s just not as free
since the day our leaders lied
so bye bye, blue American skies
kill our sons to make your money
with a smile in your eyes.
get the rich ones richer,
let the poorer ones die
while you're spinning those dispicable lies
spinning those dispicable lies
well, here we are on the future's eve
looking for a voice we can believe
as we sit and pray this war will end
so come on,
George be nimble,
George be slick -
George, don't forget to check with Dick
'cause Chaney is the devil's only friend
and as I watch them on the screen,
their words obtuse,
their smiles obscene -
is their arrogance so deep?
and, my God, how can they sleep?
but sleep they do,
they're sleeping still
as they send our heroes to be killed
and as Haliburton's coffers fill
as still
our leaders lie.
so bye bye, blue American skies
now I'm jaded
and I hate it
but I've opened my eyes.
my innocence has bid a tearful goodbye;
it was killed by your dispicable lies
killed by your dispicable lies
well, I met a man who'd served his tour
he was safe and sound and home from war
if you didn't count his missing leg.
and I tried to watch the evening news
but was battered by conflicting views
as the anchor man looked bothered
and dismayed.
and as the pundit waved his flag
I wondered if his conscience nagged
but it did not appear to;
his lines were all adhered to.
so I went to the Atlantic sea
to visit Lady Liberty -
she sighed and turned away from me
the day our leaders lied.
so bye bye, blue American skies
some day soon
I'll be immune
but now there's tears in my eyes.
the rapist wears a presidential disguise
while he's spinning those dispicable lies. 04/01/2006 Author's Note: *

Posted by Angela Nuzzo on 04/02/07 at 10:23 AM Holy cow, Maria! That's very well done. I sang it to the original tune as I read your words. Don McLean would probably love this! ;) |
