Birth of A Hard Woman

by Tracy Ellen

Time is circles spinning
Lost my mind when I spied
Your wicked grinning
Tired tongues glide
Over dry thick lips
Sandpaper, sketchy talk
Arms frenzied whips
As legs forget to walk
An inevitable fall
Due to cruelty and lies
And a screeching call
The buzzing of flies
Suffocates my ears
I don’t want to hear
Or see through tears
I know why you’re here!

Gasp, Gasp
Hand reaching up
for something steady
Rise, cursed woman!
You know who you are!

Time continues to spin
Mind is still missing
Ears useless in the din
Dry lips miss kissing
Arms and legs useless
Heart broken and cold
Spirit barren, muse-less
A perfect rebirth of bold
I’ve grown and I know
I never needed you
Or all this weary woe
And I’m surprised, too,
To find that I enjoy
The sharp, stinging sensation
On my backhand, boy
And the red inflammation
The dark mark on your face
Everything is alright now
My feet solid in place
Eyes and mind bright now
Don’t just stand there
Cowering, leave, leave!

Breathe, breathe
It’s over and I’m stronger
And maybe a little meaner
Heart a little leaner
And that’s okay with me
