No-Rhythm

by Kourosh Taheri-Golvarzi

Is a rhythm set and set? Are beats and times
perceptible definition For from one beat to the next,
the blank, white space has timing, too. Rhythm lives
in no-rhythm; beats are points of reference.
Lungs, inhaling, need a diaphragm to breathe.
Inhalation is an artificial state and suffocation is
a natural state.

Breathe.

Rest.

Breathe.

Rest.

Die.

The body works to live and then relaxes to expire
with precious little time to hire a soul, a spirit, for
a shot at warm enlightenment and possibly nirvana,
rhythmically, laboriously toiling through each suffocated
inhalation, labouring to stay alive
in a realm of existence that blinds even superlatively
perceptive eyes.
The rhythm in lungs passing air,
the rhythm in air,
the rhythm in blinking,
the rhythm in not blinking,
brandishes the meaning of being
and the worth of life.

Beats of drums or beats of bass,
the beats of solar prominences striking down upon this place
we call the "earth", and beats of rocks and sticks provide
us points of reference as mind and brain require dynamics to
perceive a state (of any kind) of being, live or gone.

A child is born,
and adolescent eats,
an old man dies,
and rhythm bears another life.
The breath of organismal life fades in and out like waves and suns,
ignoring questioning of "how?" or "why?", for questions not
begetting proper answers are dilemmas in themselves.
Does peace require "how?" or "why?", or even "when?"
(perhaps it's "if"), and is there even peace at all?
So, what is it, I ask?
A proper answer needs awareness I don't have.
When I observe the shadow of my rhythm (hopefully, by then,
I'll see nirvana), twisting through the ethers, lost in time,
then, maybe then, I'll come back here and tell you why.

Author's Note: Finally (*FINALLY*) back to writing again. This one is pretty weak compared to my other stuff, but I'm getting there, goddamnit!
