Futility.

by Darren Swift

Put out the light, put out the light
for the enemy comes this way;
his tongued shoes carry messages
of import which will bring madness
to those who shall listenfollow.

Put on the light, put on the light
for the enemy hides in the shadows;
sing songs and shout him away
before the night swallows us into
a belly full of bitterness/blight.

Put out the light, put out the light
for the enemy hones in on the warmth,
extinguish the fire, shield your hearts
lest the monster fries them, eating them
relished and spiced with our feelings.

Put on the light, put on the light,
for the enemy walks amongst us,
hidden by ordinariness, disguised
in normalcy; we shall see his face,
know it by the bloodied twisted lips.

Put out the light, put out the light
for the enemy hears us now,
stay silent so the voices of truth
do not bring him this way, his
smiles suppressing his hunger.

Put out the light, put on the light.
The enemy is here.

It does not matter any more.

Yes, the message in this poem could be taken as one of hopelessness. Yet, as long as some have breath in them, won't they fight off the enemy? It could be that for some, nothing they do will scare the enemy away, but strength doesn't lie in ourselves, but outside ourselves. Well, JMHO.
