Alice

by Richard Vince

Alice believes her edges are frayed,
So she hides her tattered self
Behind pristine clothing in the hope
That she will never fall apart.

She is not uncared for;
Her body and soul are careworn
From the efforts of all those
That love her to keep her
From falling apart.

Think of them as your soul
Floats up to the stars again.
Think of them as you drown yourself
In an artificial ocean again.
Think of how they never listened,
Choosing complexity over simplicity.

Alice believes she should be
A chameleon, changing hues
To hide inside the comfort of
Her self constructed wonderland.

She knows where the rain will fall,
So she can always be where she can
Wash away the regrets of
Another day as an actor, merely
Playing this well worn part.

Think of her as she feigns wonderment,
Even though she has played out
All the scenes before.
Think of her as she begins to forget
The girl who once lived inside her
Of whom only tatters remain.
