To Be a Horse

by Tony Whitaker

As a child I craved being
with horses all the time
I wanted to be a horse
I galloped, reared, kicked and nickered.

When I spied a new thing I would
walk up to it cautiously, roll my
head forward and
down to get a good look
jumping to the side with a squeal.

I’d approach it again to smell
it with an air of
suspicion and high
alertness all the while
making snorting and blowing sounds

Then growing up
I realize
I too am
a beast of burden.
