Vignette

by Richard Vince

As I watch you,
The surroundings fade
As if I drew only you
And forgot about them.

You become a patch
Of reality to punctuate
Endless nothing.
An island of light in
A sea of darkness.

Darkness you never understood,
So you separated yourself
From it, occupying a haven
Of light and leaving
The rest of us to
Struggle outside.

We try to be good and
Banish it, but the light
That you exude never fails
To create more shadows.

Therefore, I separate you
From the ordinary world
In which I must live
By seeing you as a
Discrete entity whose
Luminescence I can direct
Into a thousand dark corners.

We all make of ourselves
Mirrors to divide and
Expand you, so that
You fill all of this:
One light, countless hearts.

My eyes shine as
I cease to see
All that is not you.

Do you follow 'themes' at various times (several poems related by 'association of ideas', rather than chronology?

I think it's a beautiful piece of writing. I applaud you for your success in putting into words a feeling I am familiar with but can never quite translate. One of my favorites.

"light/That you exude never fails/To create more shadows." Don't be surprised if I borrow this line or something similar to it for a future work (properly crediting you of course). Good stuff.
